and mission to go along with business, as usual, this year, and we want this year’s 4th of July to be a celebration of our shared humanity and the on-going fight for freedom for all Americans.⁠⠀

Here's a sneak peek of our featured show 😉⁠⠀

This July, our featured exhibition, Pop Western, offers a fresh perspective on established artistic traditions and antiquated cultural norms. Featuring vibrant new works from Lichtenstein-inspired painter and woodworker Mitch McGee and paintings from one of our newest artists, Kevin Chupik, Pop Western explores the visual collision of 60’s pop-art motifs and the recognizable tropes of Western Americana, all while employing the social commentary that lies below the surface of pop art. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Both artists play with juxtaposition in fascinating and thoughtful ways; Chupik pairs forlorn landscapes and pensive subjects with vivid neons, while McGee’s cowboy and cowgirl portraits feature gender-swapped advertisements from the ’50s and ’60s as their backgrounds. Of his subtle commentary on traditional gender roles and their negative cultural impact, McGee says of his daughters, “I want my girls to know they can change spark plugs, just like I want to contribute to doing the dishes and laundry.” ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
We’ll also be showcasing a selection of Ellen Koment’s arresting encaustic paintings, which abstract the Western landscape in bright, bold colors that play well with the pop art palettes of Chupik and McGee. ⁠⠀

I've been asked many times why I paint black and brown women. I'm a white girl. I guess it surprises people. I realize now that my response was not enough. Or it was ignorant, unconscious, privileged. ⁠
⁠
I used to say, "Because I paint what I find beautiful, and I want to paint what connects us as women regardless of our skin color". Some of you may be thinking, "What's wrong with that"? Well, it's the "regardless of skin color" that is the problem. For a black woman, it's never "regardless of skin color". ⁠
⁠
What would I say now? ⁠
⁠
"I want black and brown women and girls to look at my paintings and see themselves and go look in the mirror and say to themselves, "I am beautiful. I am a work of art"! I want them to know they are seen and heard and valued. ⁠Their stories matter. Their lives matter. ⁠
⁠
Of course I want all women to feel this way. Of course I do. But I realize one way I can help in my small corner of the world is to raise my consciousness around what I do and what I paint and how I talk about what I paint. It's small, but it's something.⁠
⁠
I wasn't raised in a racist home. I was lucky. It could have gone the other way. I could have been raised to hate. But my parents welcomed everyone. My older brother's best friends were black, and they called me cupcake and I adored them. Many of my closest girlfriends growing up were black and Latina. I've dated black men, lived with a Latin guy and never once thought to ask, "What's it like for you in the world"? ⁠
⁠
There ya go. That's my white privilege. I never once thought to ask, "Are you scared when you drive? Are you afraid you will be killed for no reason? How do people treat you differently because of your skin? What's it feel like to be the only black person here"? ⁠
⁠
Nope, never thought to ask. ⁠
⁠
So, how do I move forward? I'm going to ask the messy questions and risk looking ignorant so that I might know them better and be educated. I'm willing to be schooled. ⁠

Our Dreamer friends ARE HERE TO STAY!! 🌟 A narrowly divided U.S. Supreme Court extended a life-support line to some 650,000 so-called DREAMers on Thursday, allowing them to remain safe from deportation for now, while the Trump administration jumps through the administrative hoops that the court said are required before ending the program.

The vote was 5-4 with Chief Justice John Roberts casting the decisive fifth vote that sought to bridge the liberal and conservative wings of the court.
⠀⠀
DACA recipients have gotten advanced degrees; they have started businesses; they have bought houses and had children who are U.S. citizens; and 90% have jobs. Indeed, 29,000 are health care professionals, working on the front lines of the COVID-19 response.
⠀⠀
So popular has the DACA program been that the Senate Republican leadership not once, but twice, worked closely with Democrats to work out a deal to protect the Dreamers, only to have Trump renege at the last moment.
⠀⠀
What Trump will do before the November election is anyone's guess. The heart of his political base is opposed to immigration in just about every form. But this is no ordinary time.
⠀⠀
Amid pandemic and racial crisis, the court's ruling is likely to focus on yet another issue where the president is at odds with public sentiment, while at the same time putting Republican officeholders between the rock of their president's views and the hard place of their own reelection bids. -via @npr

M: Art can serve so many functions, from igniting activism to providing a little visual relief when everything around us seems dark. What do you think the role of art and artists is or should be in difficult times like these?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
RM: Art has always been a way to reflect ourselves back to the world. To make the invisible visible. To give meaning to wordless moments–to uplift us, expose us, provoke us. I think the same is true now. In fact, I think art, in all forms, will provide a light at the end of this dark time. When we look back at history, it’s not just the wars we study; It’s the art, the music, the architecture, the movies. Art can be a salve, but it can also help us evolve. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
M: That’s a wonderfully thoughtful perspective. Where do you find yourself turning for inspiration right now?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
RM: Art Journaling, online art classes, books, movies, connecting with others and cake. There has been a lot of cake eating. ⁠⠀

M: What, if anything has changed about your studio practice since we’ve all been social distancing?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
RM: I’ve always isolated myself to get into a space where art is possible. So, my studio practice hasn’t changed. Only a strange difficulty to paint in the midst of everything that’s going on. I’ve wondered more frequently lately — what is the purpose of my art? ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
M: Have you found that the events surrounding the global pandemic we’re weathering have changed the nature of the work you’re making right now?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
RM: At first, I didn’t think so. I often paint portraits with birds and flowers – to reflect a woman’s communion with nature. As I embarked on a portrait in the first week of quarantine, I placed a bird over the eyes of one of my ladies. When I stepped back, I realized my work had become an expression of a darker relationship to nature, one where we are blind to the effect we have on the earth. Also, a contemplation on the fear we are all feeling from what we are witnessing. Maybe. I’m always interpreting my work after the fact. ⁠⠀

M: Your work is such an amazing vehicle for sparking hope and inspiring solidarity in our shared human experience, it always brightens our days here at MiXX. In that vein, what do you think the role of art and artists is or should be in difficult times like these?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
LS: Thank you for saying that. At first I thought no-one would ever buy art again, nor should they. Then, when the dust settled, it became clear that art can be a source of comfort and hope which is exactly what people need right now. Whether it’s music, dance, literature, poetry, a sparkly diorama 🙂 … Art keeps us sane!⁠⠀
⁠⠀
And indeed one of my oldest designs “The world is a scary place but I have waterwings” has become VERY popular in recent weeks, because it allows people to feel the fear and vulnerability, but also the innate, ridiculous courage humans can manifest in difficult circumstances. Also, people are keen to capture an important part of their lives in an art piece, which my way of working allows. So I am making family portraits, wedding portraits, capturing memories, that people can have with them during the shelter-in-place and beyond.

This week, we’re checking in with another MiXX favorite, master of miniature, Lisa Swerling, to discuss her experiences and perspective from her California studio ✨⁠⠀

M: Have you found that the events surrounding the global pandemic we’re weathering have changed the nature of the work you’re making right now?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
LS: For the first few weeks of the California lockdown I couldn’t do any art at all. The immediate needs of those at risk in my local community was so epic and immediate, doing anything except trying to organize relief and safety for them felt wrong.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
So I started helping a friend who had set up a local Nextdoor group called Good Fairy, matching volunteers and those in need. My art felt redundant, which was fine. But when we started setting up a website to help with communication, I suddenly had the brainwave that I could make miniature fairies to represent all the good things people were doing, and photograph them to make the site as friendly and positive as possible.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
So I spent a while doing that, and it was really sweet and wonderful gluing wings onto various tiny figures. And you become aware of magic happening everywhere. Everyday activities, like walking someone’s dog when they have to completely self-isolate, becomes an act of great kindness. Or yoga classes being canceled and then discovering Zoom, and suddenly you can do yoga in a class of hundreds of people all over the world. Health workers showing their incredible character and commitment. So a kind of magic of invention, human connection, and courage manifested and I was happy to be able to express that through my art.
